You get a lot for your money when you lease a Mercedes-Benz GLC. There’s that coveted 3-pointed-star badge on the bonnet, as well as an interior that’s both comfortable and luxurious while also being high-tech and up-to-date. Running costs can also be surprisingly low, thanks to economical yet powerful diesel engines and very cheap-to-run plug-in hybrid variants. As a large 5-door SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is an inherently practical car. Occupants front or rear should have no complaints about the amount of head-, leg- or kneeroom on offer and seat comfort is excellent. There’s no shortage of space to keep odds and ends around the cabin either, with a large glovebox and big door bins, while nets in the boot ensure smaller items can be secured easily.
With its 550-litre capacity, the boot is big, if not the very biggest in the class. Be warned, though: if you’re leasing either the petrol-electric or diesel-electric hybrid GLC, boot space with the rear seats in place drops to 395 litres – this is because some room has to be given over to the battery packs that hold power for the electric motor.
Depending on which model you choose, the Mercedes-Benz GLC can be surprisingly cheap to run for a large and luxurious SUV.
The basic petrol-engined model, the GLC 300, is the cheapest version to lease, but also likely the most expensive to run, as it can only return around a claimed 33mpg fuel economy. The GLC 300d diesel does better on this front, returning up to 10 miles per gallon more, while the GLC 220d can hit 46mpg.
But either of the plug-in hybrid GLCs will blow those figures out of the water – as long as you’re able to charge the car’s battery regularly and make maximum use of its zero-emissions driving capability. Do that, and you may come close to a pretty remarkable 157mpg in the GLC 300de diesel, or 128mpg from the GLC 300e petrol.
The GLC comes as a practical 5-door SUV as standard – effectively a raised-up version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate. There’s also a sleeker-looking GLC Coupe.
Fans of fast SUVs are spoilt for choice with the Mercedes-Benz GLC. There’s a pair of high-performance variants to choose from, both of which are products of Mercedes’ racy AMG division. The AMG GLC 43 brings 390hp to the table but you wouldn’t think it to look at it, as it’s quite subtle and classy. More powerful performance, as well as more extroverted styling, is on offer from the AMG GLC 63S, which can go toe-to-toe with supercars in the 0-62mph stakes: despite weighing 2 tonnes, with 510hp and 4-wheel drive this SUV can nevertheless run the benchmark sprint in just 3.8 seconds.

AMG Line AMG Line Premium AMG Line Premium Plus AMG 43 AMG 63 S
AMG Line is the entry-level Mercedes-Benz GLC trim, but if you lease one you won’t feel short-changed, as it certainly doesn’t feel ‘entry-level’. Standard kit includes sporty AMG exterior styling, privacy glass, 19-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable front seats, 3-zone climate control and a voice-operated infotainment system.
There’s no shortage of alternatives for the Mercedes-Benz GLC, including traditional German competitors the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, as well as the Jaguar F-Pace, Volvo XC60 and Lexus NX. You can see how the X3 and GLC compare in more detail in our head to head article.
This is a strong field, but the GLC holds its own thanks to its very classy interior and superior ride comfort. There’s very little to choose between it and the Audi, and the GLC only loses out to the BMW and the Jaguar when it comes to driving fun.
Premium German brands like Mercedes have struggled to match the customer satisfaction achieved by Japanese rivals in recent owner surveys – but there are no serious long-term reliability issues evident for the GLC.
If you choose a petrol or diesel engine, the GLC has a 550-litre boot with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1600 litres when the seats are folded down. But the hybrids’ battery packs reduce their seats-up total to just 395 litres.
Technically, there’s just 1: AMG Line. Mercedes-Benz considers Premium and Premium Plus to be bundled ‘packs’ of optional extras, but in practice they’re equivalent to 2 higher trim levels. The high-performance AMG 43 and AMG 63 versions also get their own suite of equipment.
Yes. Every version gets the Mercedes-Benz ‘Parktronic’ system, which includes both front and rear parking sensors with visual and audible warnings if you’re getting too close to a nearby obstacle.
It’s not the most spacious car in its class, but for most family purposes it’ll be more than enough. As noted above, the plug-in hybrid versions have a little less boot space than their purely petrol and diesel-engined counterparts.
The Mercedes-Benz badge has an appeal of its own for many people, but when it’s sitting on the nose of what is a very accomplished, luxurious and classy car in its own right, it’s not surprising that leasing a Mercedes-Benz GLC is a popular choice.
