The C-Class has a cleaner and more elegant cabin compared with some of its luxury rivals. Above all, it’s a Mercedes – which means it’s well built, neatly designed and loaded with the latest-gen tech. Entry-level models come fitted with climate and cruise control, a reversing camera and plush leather seats. All models are fitted with satnav as standard, which makes use of a striking central navigation and infotainment touchscreen. Everything in the cabin is of high quality, and the functions are intuitive and easy to use.

Quiet, Comfortable And Perfect For Long Drives

The new C-Class is powered exclusively by highly sophisticated, electrified, 4-cylinder engines. The use of 4- rather than 6- or even 8-cylinder engines in executive cars is increasingly commonplace, as carmakers strive to reduce emissions. These 4-cylinder Mercedes units use electric and turbo technology to boost power and efficiency. Plug-in and mild-hybrid technology is introduced across the range – and in a first for Mercedes, every diesel and petrol engine in the 5th-gen models comes with a 48-volt belt-integrated starter generator. This creates electricity as you brake or decelerate and then uses that charge to provide extra acceleration, with a power boost of up to 20hp. At its heart, though, the C-Class is all about refined cruising. It’s quiet and comfortable, and perfect for longer journeys. The Sport models have firmer suspension than the entry-level SE versions, and therefore feel more confident in the corners. If you want the ultimate relaxing drive, then opt for the plug-in hybrid C300e – it’s whisper quiet and offers smooth acceleration boosted by a wave of electric torque. Meanwhile, the range-topping ‘full’ AMG models are made for performance and are a lot faster than any executive car has a right to be.

The boot in the C-Class is a little smaller than some of its competitors, but there’s enough space for several suitcases. The plug-in hybrid models – with their batteries stored between the rear wheels – do eat into the boot space somewhat, though the rear seats can fold down to provide more storage if required.

The Estate, meanwhile, has a very decent 490-litre boot, which grows to 1,510 litres with the seats folded down. That’s the same as the BMW 3 Series and only 30 litres shy of the Audi A4.

Interior storage includes door bins, as well as various cubbyholes in the dashboard. The glovebox is quite big and there are 2 cupholders in the rear armrest.
With engines ranging from 1.5 to 2.0 litres in capacity, the latest C-Class powerplants will offer improved fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. The smaller petrol engine can be ordered in either 170- or 204hp form, while the 2-litre unit generates an impressive 258hp. Depending on size and power output, these petrol engines will average between 36-46mpg and emit between 141- and 180g/km of CO2.

The latest diesels – all 2-litre versions – generate either 163-, 200- or 265hp and can achieve up to 57.6mpg.

A new plug-in hybrid C300e will join the range, bringing with it a seriously impressive electric-only range of 62 miles thanks to a bigger 25.4kWh battery pack. The hybrid combines its 129hp electric motor with a not-sluggish 204hp petrol engine, so its combined 308hp promises to make it genuinely quick. It can run in electric-only mode at speeds up to 87mph and will charge in 30 minutes on a rapid charger.
