What’s The Cabin Like?

How Does It Drive?

If you’re reclining in comfortable bliss in the S-Class’ back seats, you may not be all that worried about how it drives, but rest assured your chauffeur will appreciate you leasing an S-Class. It seems wrong to use the term ‘entry-level’ for a car as refined as the Mercedes, and indeed even the cheapest S350d diesel model combines smooth and quiet operation with punchy power when needed. Handling is good, too – while this is certainly no sports car, the driver doesn’t feel completely cut off from the road, either. A more powerful S400d diesel can be specified for the long-wheelbase version, while the S500 petrol engine – which is even quieter than the diesels, although not as efficient – is available across the range. A petrol-electric plug-in hybrid version, promising a very long pure-electric range, will join the line-up in due course.

The S-Class is a 4-door saloon, but it’s a pretty big one, so storage and practicality are good, if not quite hitting the heights of a large SUV or estate car like the Range Rover.

The boot can hold a decent 550 litres of luggage, which is more than key rival the Audi A8 can manage, and accessing it is very easy thanks to a hands-free power-operated bootlid.

Finally, there’s oodles of storage space for odds and ends, with a large box under the central armrest, hefty cupholders and generously proportioned door bins.
The smooth S350d diesel will return just over 40mpg in typical use, while the S400d hovers around the 37- or 38mpg park. The S500 petrol is unsurprisingly thirstier, but driven gently can still hit a reasonable 32- to 34mpg.

If you really want to minimise your running costs when leasing a Mercedes S-Class, it’s worth holding out for the soon-to-be-launched petrol-electric plug-in hybrid.
