Renault Zoe
The Renault Zoe is an utterly charming small electric car with plenty going for it. Renault has updated it regularly over the last few years, and the latest version here has a techy, high-quality interior as well as, crucially, up to 238 miles of battery range from a single charge. And even though it’s quite little on the outside, which makes it friendly to drive in busier areas, it has a surprising amount of interior space, including a boot big enough for a buggy or a weekly food shop. Cheap to lease and run, the Zoe makes a great zero-emissions commuter car, and would even work well for families with younger kids.

Vauxhall Corsa
Vauxhall’s iconic small hatchback is still one of the very best. This latest Corsa – the sixth version since 1982 – is one of the most spacious and comfy little cars on the market. It also has a lovely easy feel about the way it does everything, from the light touch of the steering, pedals and gearshift, to the way it gently bobs over the road. Very cheap to lease and just as cost-effective to run, the Corsa has always been known as a go-to ‘first car’, but actually, these days the Corsa has a real sense of high quality throughout. All versions get lots of equipment, including alloy wheels and a central touchscreen, and there’s even a fully electric version – that’s the best one, in fact, because it’s the quickest, the quietest, and the cheapest to run.

Nissan Qashqai
The Nissan Qashqai was the best-selling car in the UK in 2022 and you’ll understand why within a few moments of driving one. This is the third version of the Qashqai since the 2008 original, and while the first two were very good – offering the driver the high-up visibility of an SUV but without SUV-sized running costs – this one is a huge improvement. Genuinely, today’s Qashqai has a hint of a luxury car about it. It’s very refined, no matter which engine you choose, and even though the exterior dimensions have stayed quite compact, it offers proper family-of-five space inside, including a large and flexible boot space. The original ‘crossover’ SUV remains one of the very best.

Fiat 500
There’s still nothing to touch the Fiat 500 when it comes to getting maximum style from a minimally sized (and priced) package. Believe it or not, it’s 15 years since this 500 was released, but it still feels as fresh as the day it was born, thanks in part to regular tweaks by Fiat, but mainly to a design that’s genuinely timeless inside and out. It’s probably obvious to point out that interior space isn’t a strong point – the two rear seats are best described as ‘occasional use’ – but it’s fantastic fun to drive and doesn’t use much fuel . Expect 50mpg around the doors from a Fiat 500. Or, for even lower costs, you could lease the brand new electric-only model.

Cupra Formentor
What’s most amazing about Cupra’s first original car – as in, the first that wasn’t originally a SEAT before being ‘upgraded’ to a Cupra - is that it feels so special and different to other Volkswagen Group SUVs. Despite being made from the same basic parts as cars like the VW Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq. The sporty Formentor looks great on the outside, it has a really upmarket and high-quality interior, and all models come with plenty of desirable equipment, great driving manners and strong, smooth, turbocharged engines. There’s even a couple of plug-in hybrid models to choose from for those wanting the lowest running and taxation costs, too.
