If you’re looking for a helpful and roomy car in which to transport your family, but you really want an electric car lease and you think they’re all tiny, unsuitable city commuters with minimal range or mega-expensive high-performance saloons, think again.
A huge explosion in mid size SUVs, hatchbacks and even estates in recent years has widened the selection for EV buyers who need fuss-free family transportation – so here’s our pick of the 10 best family electric cars, sorted in order of their cheapest monthly leasing cost.
1. MG5
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 250 miles
Not only is the MG5 is the cheapest electric family car we’ve got on this list, it’s also one of the most affordable electric estate cars on the market. Monthly leasing costs start at a little over £300. For that, you get a practical, well-equipped estate with a 464-litre boot at the back, as well as a 115kW (156hp)/260Nm e-motor and 61.1kWh battery pack – all of which means up to 250 miles between charges and also sprightly performance of 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds.
If you’re looking for an affordable family electric car with bags of space and impressive performance, the MG5 is well worth considering.
2. Peugeot E-2008
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 214 miles
Despite being the smallest crossover-SUV EV on our list, the Peugeot e-2008 doesn’t mean you have to accept compromises.
This French machine has super-smart exterior styling, a surprisingly capacious passenger compartment – with rear seats that would be fine for kids of all ages, save for abnormally tall late-teenagers, perhaps – and a 405-litre boot to cap it all off.
With a 50kWh battery pack and 136hp/260Nm motor, the E-2008 isn’t the longest-range nor quickest family electric car on this list, but for less than £400pcm it will suit most families’ needs down to the ground.
3. Skoda Enyaq iV
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 331 miles
A quite brilliant family entry into the world of EVs from Skoda and you wouldn’t expect anything less from this car maker. The Enyaq has a choice of two battery sizes (62- and 82kWh), and the option to have either one or 2 electric motors, resulting in plenty of specification choice.
No matter which one you go for, you’ll get at least 256 miles of range but the ‘80’-badged models (with the bigger battery pack) all go comfortably more than 300 miles in a single hit.
Where the Skoda scores really highly is that it has a vast, comfortable and beautifully appointed passenger cabin, as well as a whopping 585-litre boot – which rises to a cavernous 1710 litres if you fold the back seats down. Sure, you could choose the technically similar Volkswagen ID.4 if you want, but we reckon the Enyaq is an even better electric family car than its source material. Find the latest prices for Skoda Enyaq leasing.
4. Hyundai Ioniq 5
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 300 miles
This picked up the prestigious UK Car of the Year Award for 2022 and with good reason – the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the most dramatic product developments for any given manufacturer in years.
Hyundai has been improving all through the 21st century with its vehicles, but the Ioniq 5 is arguably the first car it has created that is genuinely world-beating. This is because it has a maximum 73kWh battery pack, which allows for 287-300 miles of range on the AWD and RWD (all- and rear-wheel-drive) models respectively. The car’s advanced 800-volt electrical architecture means it can be topped back up from 10-80% charge in a mere 18 minutes.
Add in the fact it looks like a direct refugee from Ready Player One, and that it has an exceptional and vast interior, and you can see why it is an award-winning creation and the perfect choice for an electric family car.
5. Kia EV6
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 328 miles
If, for some reason, you don’t like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 – maybe you find its angular exterior too challenging, or you don’t like the white surrounds for the twin screens in its cabin – then good news. You can have pretty much the exact same EV in the Kia EV6, only with a swoopier body, a more straightforward (yet still sheer class) interior and, in fact, a slightly larger 77.4kWh battery.
This Korean stunner can go up to 328 miles on a charge, and yet remains as practical and pleasant inside as it can be to make family life that bit easier.
There’s no doubt about it: Kia and Hyundai are making big strides that are starting to put both companies ahead of the European elite when it comes to the best cars in various automotive classes. The EV6 best exemplifies Kia’s evolution more than any other product it sells right now, cementing its place in our list of the best family electric cars.
6. Audi Q4 e-tron
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 316 miles
Audi’s ‘e-tron’-badged range of EVs is growing day by day, but it could be argued that the Q4 e-tron is the best of the lot, and certainly a contender for the best electric family car.
This is because it is the only all-electric Audi yet released which can go beyond 300 miles on a single charge in the right specification, as neither the larger e-tron SUV nor the desirable e-tron GT high-performance saloon can manage such a feat. Not only that, but in its single-motor guises, the Q4 e-tron is the only rear-wheel-drive Audi that has been sold bar the mighty R8 supercar, which is quite some claim to fame.
Thankfully, as a family SUV, the Q4 e-tron works brilliantly. The interior looks futuristic and is built to Audi’s usual first-rate standards, but it’s also spacious and intuitively laid-out. That the Q4 e-tron is also lovely to drive, with epic refinement and strong performance, is merely the icing on a particularly tasty EV cake.
7. Mercedes-Benz EQB
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 257 miles
If you want the incredibly-difficult-to-achieve combination of seven seats, an elevated SUV seating position, reasonably compact exterior dimensions, relatively affordable leasing costs and decent EV range, there’s only one vehicle that meets your requirements and it’s this Mercedes-Benz EQB.
Related to the internal-combustion-powered GLB, and also the all-electric EQA and EQC models from the German outfit, the EQB has all the prestige allure of the 3-pointed star, combined with a super-useful interior for larger families and up to 257 miles of EV range. That makes for an overall best family electric car package which is very hard to resist, we’re sure you’ll agree.
8. BMW i4
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 366 miles
BMW was one of the earlier adopters of the 21st-century EV movement and has four products for people to choose from – the i3, the iX3, the iX and the i4. But while the first three of these are all excellent in their own ways, it’s the i4 we’ve chosen here, mainly because it’s one of those rare but brilliant modern EVs which ISN’T an SUV.
Instead, you get a swish 5-door coupe-style fastback body, an absolutely top-notch interior with a superb human-machine interface for the infotainment, a whopping 470-litre boot and also battery packs which will take you more than 300 miles to a charge on both models; the rear-drive 40 and the high-performance AWD M50.
If you’re looking for an electric family car, there’s a lot to love with a BMW i4 lease.
9. Polestar 2
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 335 miles
The Polestar 2 has been around for three years now, so in EV terms it kind of feels like an old friend. But that doesn’t detract from what a superb family electric car this is, especially now the range of models you can choose from has been expanded from one to three varieties – including the front-wheel-drive Long Range car, which can do up to 335 miles on a single charge.
However, what makes the Polestar so appealing is its chunky yet crisp exterior styling, and a wonderfully minimalistic and ultra-cool Scandinavian interior, complete with pin-sharp infotainment managed by Android. You won’t find many classier family EVs than this one, that’s for sure.
10. Ford Mustang Mach-E
Maximum Quoted Driving Range: 379 miles
With a 379-mile maximum range and its SUV body, the Ford Mustang Mach-E makes total sense as a family electric car
The long wheelbase Car allows for acres of interior space, so even taller children will be fine in the back of the Ford, while there are boots at both the front and the back of the Mustang in which to store clobber.
What’s great about the Mach-E is that it lives up to the legendary Mustang name – despite its size, this is one of the most fun EVs you can drive. Indeed, in its more powerful twin-motor AWD formats, it’s properly quick too.
As our top 10 best family electric cars run-down has shown, there is so much choice available. Whether you’re looking for a traditional family SUV, a sleek coupe or practical estate, all of these electric cars are brilliant choices for every family journey, no matter the length.
