Just be mindful if you choose an Octavia plug-in hybrid – the batteries live under the boot floor, reducing its capacity by 150 litres.

A very large boot doesn’t mean passengers suffer, though, and 5 people can be carried very comfortably. Children could probably play a game of football in the back and you wouldn’t notice. Head- and legroom are ample, even for long-legged people, and with equally spacious door bins and compartments, their phones and wallets are also well catered for.
Encompassing petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid technology, the Octavia’s engine choice is as impressive as its load-lugging ability. The efficient diesels return high-50s to high-60s mpg, the petrols’ economy pitched from low-40s to mid-50s according to official economy tests.
