Porsche’s smallest coupe is one of the most exciting and enjoyable cars you can drive, so if that’s your thing then look no further. It also does the sensible stuff, with a high-quality interior and a reasonable amount of boot space. You get a choice of 4- and 6-cylinder petrol engines, but all versions come with at least 300hp for stunning performance.

What’s The Cabin Like?

If you think Audis and BMWs are well built, just wait until you see a Porsche. The Cayman’s cabin is deliberately simple, but it’s beautifully made. The materials are all classy and tactile, and they are bolted together immaculately. All the buttons feel substantial, while the handles and dials feel reassuringly solid. The focal point is the 7-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dash, which is intuitive and sharp, if not quite as good as the best in the segment. It’s easy to use, though, and it comes with the Apple CarPlay iPhone integration software.

How Does It Drive?

Unbelievably well. The 911 might be the definitive sports car, but the Cayman runs it close. The car feels incredibly light and nimble in the corners, the steering is more or less perfect and there’s bags of grip. The body is also very well controlled, with almost no lean in the bends. Everything, from the brakes to the steering to the indicator stalks, feels immediate and responsive. It’s brilliant. It’s great on normal roads, too. Motorway miles won’t be an issue at all and driving around town is fine. As with all sports cars, visibility can be an issue, but the Cayman is easier to see out of than some coupes. Light steering, compact dimensions and a tight turning circle make the Cayman easy to drive. The size and manoeuvrability make it easy to park, although the standard reversing camera helps. More useful is the ability to nip into small gaps and the surprising low-down eagerness of the 1.0-litre petrol engine.

Interior space is a traditional weak spot of sports cars everywhere, but the Cayman is roomy by the standards of the class. It has 2 boots – 1 at the front and 1 at the back – providing a total of 334 litres. That’s more than you get in a Ford Fiesta, albeit spread over 2 compartments. More to the point, it’s more space than you get in a Toyota Supra or an Alpine A110. The Audi TT has slightly less outright luggage space, but it’s all in 1 boot and you can fold down the rear seats to free up 715 litres of capacity.

In the cabin, the Porsche has a surprising amount of headroom and plenty of shoulder-room. It only has 2 seats, just like the Supra, A110 and Jaguar F-Type, whereas the TT trumps them all with 2 occasional rear seats.
Though the Cayman is powerful, it’s small, light and aerodynamic. That allows the entry-level car to return between 29.1- and 31.7mpg on the official economy test. The lightweight Cayman T is marginally more economical, hitting 29.4- to 31.7mpg, but all versions of the Cayman are much of a muchness when it comes to consumption. Even the 4.0-litre cars manage economy in the high 20s.

By the same token, those who want the least polluting option will plump for the Cayman T, thanks to its 202-218g/km CO2 emissions. That said, it isn’t much more eco-friendly than the 4.0-litre cars, and such quibbles are unlikely to shape which Cayman you lease.

Porsche 718 Cayman Models Available

718 Cayman Coupe

The 718 Cayman is only available with 2 doors, 2 seats and a solid roof. If you want a convertible, you need the 718 Boxster. It’s almost identical in terms of engine and equipment, but it comes with a folding fabric hood and a subtly different model line-up (mainly because its top dog is called the Spyder, not the GT4).

The GT4 model was recently replaced as the top Panamera by the new GT4 RS version, which has an entirely new engine and is capable of 0-62mph in a stunning 3.4 seconds.

The basic Cayman is well equipped, with satellite navigation, air conditioning and heated seats all included as standard. Automatic headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels are also thrown in, along with sports seats and a 150-watt onboard sound system.

There are some great alternatives to the Cayman. You can have the more practical Audi TT, which is especially good in TT RS flavour, or the smoother, more comfortable Toyota Supra. The Jaguar F-Type is an astonishingly pretty option, while the Alpine A110 is a little-known sports car that deserves more recognition than it gets. But although they’re all good cars in their own right, none can match the 718 Cayman for driver involvement and engagement.
