What’s The MINI Countryman Interior Like?

Step inside the car and the circular infotainment screen, comfy seats and funky design touches mark the Countryman out as something a cut above the norm. MINI Countryman Driving Experience

It may be the biggest MINI yet, but those traditional, sharp responses and playful character of the regular hatchback model are still intact here. The Countryman’s ride is firm but comfortable, and the compact dimensions make getting about town a stress-free affair. Refinement levels on the motorway are among the best in class, while selectable driving modes can alter the feel of the car to suit your mood. The broad engine range kicks off with a nippy plug-in hybrid and 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol powerplant for city driving. For most, the more powerful 2.0-litre petrol engine in the S model should strike the right note as a capable all-rounder. The 306hp John Cooper Works model, meanwhile, is capable of sprinting to 62mph in just 5.1 seconds. That is seriously quick, even for a sports car.

It might be a MINI, but the Countryman gives up nothing in terms of interior space. It’s generous in room compared to its less stylish rivals and 4 adults will have no trouble getting comfortable in the spacious interior. The rear seats can recline a bit too if you tick the right option box.

A 5th passenger may find the centre rear seat less accommodating, especially in the hybrid model where the rear bench base is slightly higher up.

The boot space measures 450 litres, the same as leasing a Volvo XC40 and slightly better than the Nissan Qashqai. The rear seats fold down to extend the cargo space to 1,390 litres, which is also comparable to most cars in this class. The plug-in hybrid does give up around 45 litres of cargo space but in reality, you won’t really notice.
The MINI Countryman is at its most efficient as a plug-in hybrid. It promises 156.9mpg when utilising the 31 miles of all-electric range. The 136hp and 178hp petrol models offer between 44.8 and 38.7mpg respectively, making the more powerful engine hardly less efficient, especially if you opt for the 4-wheel-drive version.

Leasing the firebreathing John Cooper Works model will see you average around 35mpg and be liable for the highest benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax bracket of 37%. The plug-in hybrid falls into the 13% BIK band.
