Strong performance.

  • One of the key strengths of the MG5’s compact powertrain is that it makes for a more spacious interior. For a small EV, there’s plenty of room in the front for adults. Rear-passenger space is equally generous, with enough room for a pair of 6-foot adults to get comfortable. The boot is also an excellent size, offering 464 litres of storage up to the parcel shelf – or 578 litres to the ceiling. This lags slightly behind the MG ZS EV, but is comparable to the rival Nissan Leaf. Fold the rear seats down and storage expands to 1456 litres.

Extra storage spaces are dotted around the cabin with large front door bins, a storage box in the centre armrest and useful smartphone storage slots on either side of the centre console.

  • The MG5 EV is only available with a 52.5kWh battery, giving it a range of up to 214 miles. This figure is relatively achievable with careful driving on the road, thanks to the car’s switchable driving modes. Switch it into Eco mode and you can expect close to 200 miles of range – with the Normal setting yielding around 190 miles. To top up the battery on the move, there are 3 levels for regenerative braking, too, with each setting gradually increasing the friction as you decelerate to channel energy back into the battery.

When you do need to recharge, the MG5 EV can be fast charged at speeds of up to 50kW, meaning a 0-80% battery top-up takes only 50 minutes – an impressively quick figure for an affordable car. When connected to a 7kW home wallbox, a full charge takes around 8.5 hours.

Excite Exclusive

The MG5 EV gets LED daytime running lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, rear parking sensors, air conditioning, cruise control, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and fabric-trimmed seats. Technology includes an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, satnav, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, 2 USB ports and a rear parking camera.

The MG5 EV Vs Competitors

The main rival for the MG5 EV is the Nissan Leaf, an electric car considered a trailblazer as one of the first mass-market EVs to go on sale in the UK. Other rivals include the smaller battery version of the Kia E-Niro SUV.

The MG5 may struggle to match the sharper driving dynamics of the Leaf, but it does offer more space and a larger boot, with dimensions on a par with the E-Niro SUV. In addition, it’s officially capable of up to 214 miles on a charge, far more than the base versions of the Leaf and E-Niro, which manage 160 and 180 miles respectively. This makes it a strong choice if you want an electric family car.

  • MG has strived to improve the reliability of its models in recent years with new engines and technology from parent company SAIC Motor. Every MG includes a class-leading 7-year/80,000-mile warranty as standard.

  • The MG5 EV has a 464-litre boot up to the parcel shelf, or a total of 578 litres to the roof. Folding the rear seats down opens up 1456 litres of storage.

  • The MG5 EV estate is available in 2 trim levels, ranging from the base Excite version to the flagship Exclusive model.

  • All versions of the MG5 EV are fitted with rear parking sensors as standard.

  • The MG5 EV offers plenty of space in the front and rear seats, and has a large boot. It also features several smartly designed interior storage cubbies.
