The GLE combines smart looks, efficient engines and, for the first time, the option of 7 seats. It’s quite a bit bigger inside than the old GLE, which allows it to carry more people and have a bigger boot.
The suspension is more sophisticated than previous versions and the car is loaded with tech, both in terms of media connectivity and safety. Mercedes is on to a real winner here – giving other strong performers, like the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, a run for their money. All but the front seats fold down as standard in the GLE. However, they’re not electrically powered like in the competitor Audi Q7. Boot space is decent but the Audi, as well as the Land Rover Discovery, can carry more.
The load bay is square-shaped and the wheel arches don’t eat too much of the space there. There’s room for a decent amount of luggage, even with 7 people, and with the second- and third-row seats folded, it has good capacity .
The hybrid GLE350de’s boot shrinks from 630 litres to 490 because of the location of the large 31.2kWh battery pack.
The plug-in hybrid GLE350de is the greenest in the range with just 19g/km of CO2 emissions and 66 miles of electric-only range. This beats the BMW X5 xDrive45e. Both it and the BMW are in the same BIK company car tax bracket, but the Mercedes has a lower list price. To get the most out of it, you’d have to use the plug as often as the pump – those able to do that will get near the official combined economy figure of 256.8mpg.
Otherwise, the base GLE300d is the one to go for if this is the main concern. It beats most rivals in fuel economy tests, both according to manufacturers’ claims and independent tests, as it can return up to 55.3mpg combined.

A sleeker rear profile which hurts boot space but makes for a very stylish family car. The GLE Coupe is only available as a 5-seater.
There are 2 AMG performance models on offer – the GLE53 4Matic+ and the GLE63S 4Matic+. The latter can sprint to 62mph in less than 4 seconds, which is fast enough that it’s moving into supercar territory.

The most basic GLE version comes with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, as well as adaptive high beam assist and LED high-performance headlights. It also gets AMG body styling to give it a sportier look.

With the third row folded, the GLE has 630 litres of boot space. Slide the middle row forward and the storage figure climbs to 825 litres. With the middle row folded down as well, the GLE has 2,055 litres of boot space.
There are 4 main trim lines in total, which are the AMG Line, the AMG Line Executive, the AMG Line Premium, and finally, the AMG Line Premium Plus. Both the AMG GLE53 and GLE63S classify as separate, higher trim levels in their own right.
All models come with parking sensors and the AMG Line Premium adds a 360-degree camera as part of the Parking Package.
