  • This is the EQV’s party piece. As standard, all models come with 7 seats, with a choice of layout – you can have 2 individual chairs in the middle and a bench seat for 3 at the back, or vice versa. In the former, you can turn the 2nd-row seats around so the 5 rear passengers can chat. Everyone will have acres of space, with leg- and headroom to spare. Most models also get a pair of fold-out tables. Sliding side doors make it easy to get in and out.

Although the regular V-Class comes in different sizes, the EQV only comes in 1 size. However, it’s the largest of the lot, which means plenty of boot space – more than 1000 litres. Should you need even more room, you can’t fold down the rear-most seats, but you can remove them completely if you need to.

There’s plenty of general storage space, including big door pockets, a huge bin under the centre console and a large glovebox.

  • The EQV’s 204hp electric motor is attached to a 90kWh battery. According to official tests, it’ll do up to 213 miles on a single charge. You can top up the battery by plugging into a home wallbox, which will take around 10 hours from 10% charge. Alternatively, you can use a public fast charger, which will refill the battery from 10- to 80% in around 45 minutes. However you use it, you’ll pay far less to fuel the EQV than you would a regular Mercedes V-Class. It’s also worth noting that monthly leasing costs are considerably less than Tesla’s Model X, which is probably the EQV’s closest rival.

The Mercedes-Benz EQV Vs Competitors

There aren’t many direct rivals to the EQV, but if you’re after 7-seat, electric-only transport then the obvious choice is the Tesla Model X. These 2 are, in most other respects, chalk and cheese – the Tesla is designed more like a car, where the EQV is van-derived, and it has far more performance too. But it’s also a little less practical.

You might also be looking at 5-seat electric cars, with large SUV examples including the Audi E-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace. Both of these are better to drive, but again, far less practical. If you’re not set on electric power, then the regular Mercedes V-Class should suit you very well.

  • The EQV name follows other Mercedes electric nomenclature – all are called EQ, which Mercedes says stands for Electric Intelligence. Like IQ. Get it? The final letter reflects the size of the vehicle, much like it does in regular Mercedes, with A being the smallest and V being the largest.

  • You can charge your EQV using a home wallbox or via a public charger. An 8-metre Mode 3 cable is included.

  • If you mean wireless charging of the car’s battery, then no – no manufacturers offer this yet, although it’s being worked on. If you mean a wireless charging pad for your phone, then Mercedes does offer such tech in other vehicles, but not in the EQV.

  • As well as the EQV, Mercedes also makes the EQA, EQB and EQC SUVs, as well as an EQS luxury saloon.

  • Mercedes has a fairly disappointing reliability record, and is often found towards the bottom of independent dependability study rankings of manufacturers. That said, electric models have fewer parts to go wrong than combustion engines, and our fingers are crossed that the EQV will prove relatively problem-free.

  • If you use a 110kW public fast charger, you can charge from 10-80% in around 45 minutes.
