The B-Class is all about interior space. There’s more room inside than you’ll find in a Mercedes GLA SUV, yet it’s compact enough and takes up no more space on the road than the A-Class hatchback. It also maintains all the other good things that makes the A-Class a popular leasing choice – the B-Class still feels comfortable and nimble to drive. And because it’s a Mercedes, you know you’ll be getting quality and reliability throughout – as well as some truly great interior tech.
Unlike some of its competitors, there’s no 7-seat option for the B-Class – but what you do get is acres of room for 5 people. The elevated seating position in the front lifts you away from the centre console, emphasising the feeling of space in the cabin. It’s similar in the back, with room even for taller adults to get comfortable.
There’s also plenty of room in the boot. On the petrol and diesel models, you’ll get 440 litres of space with the rear seats in place – enough for a large pram or several large suitcases – although the plug-in hybrid is slightly smaller at 405 litres. On all models, the rear seats can be slid back and forth to increase boot space or rear legroom accordingly. They can also be reclined for extra comfort, or folded down completely in a handy 40/20/40 split.
All the engines in the B-Class range are relatively economical. The smooth, torque diesels, meanwhile, feel like a good fit for the B-Class, and offer up to 55.4mpg.
The most interesting in the line-up is the plug-in hybrid B250e. Due to the way the fuel economy has been measured, it doesn’t boast the triple-digit theoretical mpg figures that you might see claimed by some competitors, but we would nonetheless expect it to return similar results in the real world. More importantly, if you keep the battery topped up it can cover up to 44 miles on electricity alone. That means the typical UK commute could potentially be covered without using any fuel at all.
All models in the B-Class range come in 5-door compact MPV form.
Trim levels available: Sport, Sport Executive Edition, AMG Line, Executive Edition, AMG Line Premium Edition, AMG Line Premium Plus Edition.
All models come with the show-stopping dual-screen MBUX infotainment system, although you’ll need Sport Executive or one of the AMG Line Premium editions to get the larger 10.25-inch screens that provide the full sci-fi experience. Other standard features include heated front seats, dual-zone climate control and also in-built navigation with live traffic alerts.
The standout feature of the B-Class is its classy, high-tech interior. It really does feel a cut above the rest on the inside. It also drives better than most – with alert steering and not too much body roll.
The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is even sharper to drive, but it’s not as comfortable as the B-Class, nor is it as quiet on the motorway. If practicality is a key consideration, both have larger siblings that offer 7 seats – the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer and the SUV-style Mercedes-Benz GLB.
The Volkswagen Touran is another strong contender. Its interior can’t match the style and sophistication of the Mercedes-Benz or the BMW, but it is comfortable and spacious, with 7 seats as standard. For a similar price you could also get a compact SUV like the Audi Q3.
The B-Class has a decent reputation for reliability. It finished 3rd in the MPV category of the 2020 What Car? Reliability Survey, just behind the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.
