How Does The Lexus RX Drive?

The Lexus RX is an ideal SUV if your preferred driving style is ‘relaxed’ rather than ‘race mode’. It’s not that the RX is short of power (it puts out 313hp, after all); but it’s better suited to easing off, sitting back and enjoying the smooth and near-silent progress the car can offer – whether you’re in town or cruising down the motorway.

Space is not in short supply within the RX, which is what you’d expect given its hefty exterior dimensions. The standard car is a 5-seater with a 695-litre boot, while the RX L stretches a bit at the back to offer 7 seats – but there’s an unsurprising reduction in boot space to a supermini-like 211 litres.

The RX L’s rear-most seats are really only suited to children, and the middle seat in the 2nd row is a bit on the tight side. But otherwise, there’s more than enough room for 4 adults to travel in total comfort, regardless of how long the journey is.
Big, plush SUVs like this are traditionally expected to bring with them big running costs, but the RX bucks the trend slightly thanks to its petrol-electric hybrid engine technology. It won’t be as cheap to run as the electric Tesla Model X or plug-in hybrid Volvo XC90, but it can still manage to return slightly in excess of 35mpg and emit less than 180g/km of CO2 in everyday driving.

The car has the ability to run on electric power alone at low speeds for short distances (such as in stop-start traffic) so is at its most efficient if you spend a lot of your time driving in town centres.
