If you like the Kia Ceed, but want a bit more space and you’re tempted by an SUV, the XCeed is the car for you. Splitting the difference between the Ceed hatchback and the Kia Niro and Sportage SUVs, the XCeed is a best-of-both-worlds proposition. It sits a little lower than most SUVs, but it’s still taller than a hatchback. Yet it still offers the practicality, solidity and reliability that has made Kia products so popular.
The Kia XCeed is designed to be more practical than the Ceed hatchback, so you get a bigger boot and roughly the same amount of cabin space. The amount of room you get depends on which engine you choose. Go for a petrol-powered car and you get a very useful 426-litre boot. But if you choose a diesel, that shrinks to a slightly less competitive 380 litres. And if you choose the hybrid, you get 291 litres of boot space.
Fortunately, there’s still a good amount of cabin space, with room for 4 adults. Headroom might be a bit tight for very tall passengers, but legroom is perfectly adequate and kids will have more than enough space. Fitting a 5th occupant into the middle seat is easier than it might otherwise be, thanks to a relatively flat floor.
With such a wide range of engines on offer, you’ll always be able to lease a Kia XCeed that fits your budget. If you’re only doing a few thousand miles a year, the 1.0-litre petrol returns around 47mpg on the official economy test and won’t break the bank. The more powerful 1.5-litre engine is just slightly less economical, returning 44.8mpg.
If you’re doing lots of long journeys, the diesel will make more sense. Achieving 55.4mpg on the official test cycle means it’s the most economical XCeed going – at least on a long run. But a 30-mile electric range makes the 1.6-litre plug-in hybrid petrol engine the most efficient powertrain for shorter trips. You may struggle to hit the official fuel consumption figure of 201.8mpg, but those who charge regularly and stay local will be able to keep the fuel bills down.
They’ll also keep their tax bills down. Particularly if they’re leasing an XCeed as a company car. With emissions of 32g/km, the hybrid XCeed attracts Benefit-in-Kind company car tax at just 13% in the 2021/22 financial year. That makes it very cheap to run.
The XCeed is only available as a 5-seat, 5-door SUV.

The XCeed range begins with the 2 version, which has plenty of equipment. You get 16-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights as standard, along with air conditioning, an 8-inch touchscreen and a reversing camera. Collision avoidance tech and lane-keeping assistance are also included as standard.
The XCeed has some stiff competition, with the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen T-Roc all rivalling it for size. The T-Roc is the biggest thorn in the XCeed’s side, offering Golf-esque cabin quality, a slightly more upmarket image and impeccable road manners. The same could also be said of the Mazda CX-30, while the SEAT Ateca and Ford Kuga offer a little more practicality. But if you want a properly premium alternative, consider the leasing a Volvo XC40, Mercedes-Benz GLA or the Audi Q2. And if you want something with more lively handling, look at the BMW X2 or a Range Rover Evoque – both of which are luxurious coupe-SUVs that provide some entertainment on a good road.
Kia has a good reputation for reliability and the XCeed is largely built with tried-and-tested components. The South Korean company also offers UK customers a 7-year warranty that will keep you covered for the duration of your lease deal.
The boot space on offer largely depends on the engine you choose. Lease an XCeed with the 1.0-litre or 1.5-litre petrol engine and you get 426 litres of luggage capacity. Opt for a 1.6-litre diesel and you get 380 litres. And if you pick the plug-in hybrid, you get 291 litres.
The XCeed range kicks off with the entry-level 2 model. From there, the Edition model marks the next rung on the ladder, followed by the 3 model. Crowning the range is the high-end 4 version.
Some versions of the XCeed come with parking sensors as standard, but the entry-level 2 and Edition models have to go without. That said, they come with a reversing camera instead, making parking much easier. Moving up to 3 and 4 models will get you rear parking sensors as well.
Because it’s a kind of halfway house between a hatchback and an SUV, the XCeed isn’t quite as spacious as some of its rivals. But it gives you more space than a conventional Ceed, particularly in the boot. With plenty of luggage room and enough cabin space to accommodate a family of 4 quite happily, the XCeed makes a lot of sense.
Offering all the advantages of the Ceed hatchback and then adding the raised driving position and off-road styling of an SUV is a recipe for success.
