Base models are fitted with the Audi’s Dynamic Suspension, and Fully adjustable air suspension is available on the Vorsprung trim, which blends comfort with a more sporty edge. All Q5’s also come with Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive, giving tidy handling and respectable all-weather agility.
The interior of the Audi Q5 and Q5 Sportback have a more traditional look. There are still a pair of digital screens. The 10.1-inch centre touch panel is perched on the dashboard, and there's an impressive 12.3-inch digital instrument display. With wireless smartphone connections and voice control, the Q5’s technology count is high and, along with the premium-quality materials, gives the impression of high-tech luxury.
Both the Audi Q5 and the Q5 Sportback offer plenty of space for passengers and cargo. Each of the cars can carry 5 adults, plus luggage. With the rear seats up, the regular Q5 holds 550 litres of boot space. The Q5 Sportback reduces that to 510 litres, rising to 1480 litres with the rear seats down, only 40 litres fewer than that of its boxier sister. Meanwhile, reduced boot space is a notable compromise on the TFSIe plug-in hybrids. The Q5 TFSIe holds 465 litres and the Q5 Sportback, 425 litres.
Similar to leasing an Audi Q3 or the Q3 Sportback, the Q5 caters for odds and ends well. Up front, there are 3 cubbies in the centre console – with another in the armrest – as well as a pair of cupholders, hidden by a roller cover. Large bins on all the doors can comfortably hold bottles. An optional storage pack improves versatility with an additional rear centre armrest cupholder, storage nets on the front seat backs, a luggage compartment net and a restraining strap. A luggage compartment partition is also available to divide the area into smaller and more usable spaces.
As with other Audi models, the Q5 and Q5 Sportback’s vast range of TFSI petrol and TDI diesel engines are efficient, taken to a whole new level with the arrival of hybrid technology. If used correctly and regularly charged, the TFSIe plug-in hybrids pair an official near-200mpg with 35-39 miles of all-electric range. Even the high performance SQ5 TDI gets mild-hybrid technology to aid efficiency.
As a guide, the petrol-powered Q5 and Q5 Sportback TFSI models’ fuel economy begins in the low-30s, with the TDI diesel models capable of mid-40s mpg, depending on exact model and specification. The plug-in hybrid TFSIe versions are capable of a quoted 156-188mpg, but only if they are charged very regularly. The SQ5 and SQ5 Sportback’s 3.0-litre TDI diesel engine gives low-30s mpg.
A pair of 265hp TFSI petrol and 204hp TDI diesel 2.0-litre engines matched to a 7-speed S tronic automatic gearbox form the bulk of the Q5 and Q5 Sportback range. The SQ5 and SQ5 Sportbacks have a 3.0 TDI V6 nestled under their bonnets, which is good for 341hp and is allied to an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission. The plug-in hybrid TFSIe Q5 and Q5 Sportbacks have a choice of 299hp and 367hp electrified powertrains, both fitted with S tronic gearbox.
There are 2 plug-in hybrid models in the Q5 and Q5 Sportback lines, which are the 299hp 50 TFSIe and the 367hp 55 TFSIe.
