Servicing your vehicle could save you money! Some people forget how important servicing your vehicle is. What people don't realise is that often, leaving your vehicle for a long time WITHOUT a service, can lead to BIG problems in the future. Vanarama's Laura Day reports.
The truth of the matter is, if you look after your vehicle properly, you'll be far less likely to get hefty repair bills in the future.
How often should a vehicle be serviced?
To make sure your vehicle is kept in tip-top condition, you should get your vehicle serviced once every year. Nowadays, even the vehicle itself will remind you when to have a service.
However, there are some age and mileage milestones you should be aware of as well. For example, the distance you can cover between oil changes. These will be shown in the vehicle's manual, along with other tasks needing to be completed throughout your vehicle's life.
How much does a service cost?
The average cost of a basic service is around £125, depending on what garage you decide to use. However, this won't include the cost of any repairs, replacements or new parts, should you need them - although some wearables, such as pollen filters, will be replaced as part of the cost.
Caring for your vehicle could save you money
Getting your vehicle serviced each year, and maintaining it between the services, is money well spent. That's because problems that are caught earlier on, are usually cheaper to fix. A well-maintained vehicle is also more efficient, so you'll save on fuel too.
And remember, if you need to make a claim under warranty, you'll usually have to show that your vehicle has got a complete service record. So, remember to get this done!
The cost of skipping servicing
It can always be tempting to skip a due service, especially if money is short. But, if you do this, you risk paying a MUCH bigger bill later on.
The cost of a service is far less than the price you'll end up paying to replace parts, due to damage through poor maintenance. For example:
- Water pump - £240
- Engine exchange - £2,575
- Cylinder head gasket - £520
Keep an eye out
Moral of the story: you'll be much less likely to incur BIG costs if you follow the servicing guidelines.
All I would say is that the advantages of servicing your vehicle heavily outweigh the minimal cost involved, and the limited effort required to organise the service, in the long run.
